The Piccolo Kitchen: Pop Concious
Join us in the Piccolo kitchen this summer for cooking demonstrations, discussions and workshops from the best of the Scotland's culinary scene. Hosted by Sarah Rankin.
Steve was raised in Edinburgh and, after finishing school, pursued a career in the hospitality industry. After a short stint working in his hometown, Steve was encouraged towards the bright lights of London before moving on to the Cote d'Azur; a journey that was key in understanding the importance of sourcing the best ingredients possible.
On returning to his native Scotland, Steve's passion for local food was to be fully ignited, working in Edinburgh's Atrium restaurant. Time here, under chef Neil Forbes, helped shape what was set to be a long journey of exploration; both in terms of using local ingredients, as well as having the utmost respect for ingredients and colleagues alike.
After 10 years working in kitchens across the UK and Europe including time setting up a restaurant in the Dordogne region of France, Steve began to teach the skills that he had spent his formative years learning.
Positions as Head Tutor at both Edinburgh School of Food & Wine and The Cookery School at Daylesford solidified Steve's reputation as one of the UK's leading culinary educators. Conversations and farming practices at Daylesford both helped give Steve a deep understanding of the crucial role that food plays within the context of environmental sustainability.
Steve is a proud member of Slow Food Cooks' Alliance and has represented the UK at Terra Madre, the world's largest food gathering.
Over lockdown, Steve founded Food for Good, a coalition of like-minded organisations that prepared and delivered over 75,000 meals for individuals and families who needed additional food support during COVID.
Steve is the recipient of the inaugural Andrew Fairlie Award for Excellence 2021.
Steve now teaches and cooks privately, in the UK and beyond, as well as directing Pop- a collective of hospitality professionals delivering conscious catering and events.
