Edinburgh's Answer to Newport Brings the Country's Best Folk Acts to the Heart of the City

Calling all Edinburgh folk fans - we have Newport at home! Edinburgh Folk & Food Festival returns to Assembly George Square Gardens with another stacked lineup of folk acts! Kick off your festival season with the best folk music from Scotland and the UK.

 

From 24 July - 02 August, the Palais du Variété Speigeltent will be bursting at the seams with crowds dancing the night away to toe-tapping tunes! New folk fans and seasoned veterans are all welcome to join us for this year’s lineup of the finest folk music that the country has to offer.

  • Breabach + Wave of the Flood (support) - Twenty years on from winning the Danny Kyle Open Stage Award at Celtic Connections, Breabach remain securely ranked amongst Scotland’s most skilled & imaginative contemporary-folk acts and at the forefront of the burgeoning traditional music scene. The band unite deep roots in Highland and Island Gaelic tradition alongside progressive musical influences and have cultivated a unique sound, anchoring double bagpipes, fiddle, whistle, step-dance and song with energetic double bass and guitar accompaniment.

  • Seth Lakeman + Paper Sparrows (support) - Seth catapulted into the music mainstream when he was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2005 for his album 'Kitty Jay'. His follow up was the gold-selling ‘Freedom Fields’ and Seth celebrates the 20th anniversary of the original release of that album with two huge tours in the UK in May and October 2026. ‘Freedom Fields’ which includes ‘Lady of the Sea’, ‘King and Country’ and ‘White Hare’ was released twice in 2006. Produced by his brother Sean Lakeman it came out on iScream and was then re-released by Relentless (EMI) where it went on to become Seth’s first of 6 UK Top 40 albums.

  • The Annual Folk & Food Festival Opening Ceilidh - Come one, come all! The festival season is upon us! Dance the night away with Will Richards & The Ceilidh Nomads in Assembly's beautiful Palais du Variete spiegeltent. A late night knees up into the wee hours as we celebrate the beginning of the Folk & Food Festival. 

         25 July | 22:30

  • An Dannsa Dub + support (tbc) - Formed in 2020, An Dannsa Dub (led by Tom Spirals and Euan McLaughlin) have been making waves. Twice nominated for Live Act of the Year at the Scots Trad Awards as well as the '23 SAMAs, the band has garnered critical acclaim for their ability to seamlessly blend the mystical sounds of Gaelic song and traditional Scottish instruments with the pulsating rhythms and deep basslines of digital dub.

         29 July | 19:30

  • Dlù + support (tbc) - One of the most respected voices of their genre, Indie Trad band Dlù are a trad fusion band from Glasgow. Comprising of Moilidh NicGriogair, Zach Ronan, Aidan Spiers, Andrew Grossart, and Seoras Chlad, their eclectic musical backgrounds influence their original melodies and arrangements, giving the band their own distinctive sound.
